Board Care & Maintenance

Looking after your sandboard and gear is essential to safe riding and also extends the life of your equipment so you can enjoy the sport for longer. Below are a few tips on how to maintain your sandboard as well as some other important information.

BOARD PROTECTION - We strongly recommend the use of a Protective Board Bag for best protection against damage and safe transit of your sandboard. Ocean Culture board bags are padded with 5mm density foam and are built to reduce the impact of bumps and scrapes from general handling, transportation and dune trekking. They also come with a large front pocket to store your wax, sunscreen, drinks and whatever else you can cram in there!

STRUCTUAL HEAT STRESS - Sandboards do not like being subjected to conditions of extreme heat for prolonged periods of time. For instance, leaving a board in the boot of the car on a hot day or exposure to direct sunlight is not recommended. This can damage or discolor the laminate and will cause the ply-core timber to become dry and brittle, resulting in weakness to the board.

WATER CONTACT- Avoid immersing your sandboard in water. Riding in the rain conditions is ok, but if you wish to ride in extremely wet conditions keep in mind that bindings and hardware are NOT rust proof and need to be disassembled, rinsed, rust-treated and completely dry before re-use. Our sandboards will perform best ridden on dry sand, although riding over wet/damp sand is acceptable providing the correct board wax is used to reduce excessive wear on the boards’ laminated base.

TOW BOARDING - We discourage this activity as our sandboards are not intended nor designed for this kind of use. Under no circumstances should our sandboards be used for any other purpose other than sandboarding on sand dunes. Failure to acknowledge this warning can seriously reduce the lifespan of the sandboard and could incur personal injury to the rider.

BOARD ‘WEAR-IN” PERIOD - Ply-timber boards require a ‘wear in’ period before attempting more radical styles of riding and maneuvers. The fibres and glues used in timber veneer need to be worked gradually - Riding your board with due care within the first few sessions is crucial to allow the timbers natural tolerance, flex and strengthening to occur. Heavy falls, tail-first landings and similar stress bearing situations can easily break a board before it has built up some flexibility and tolerance (NOTE: This does not mean the board won’t ever break at all... Please refer to bottom of the page)

CHECK BINDINGS AND TIGHTEN BOLTS REGULARLY - Footstraps and bindings can become extremely hazardous when loose. They can detach from the board while you are riding at high speed, performing jumps or during a heavy fall. It is recommended to check your fittings regularly & tighten when necessary. Note that all ‘single mount’ sandboards (2x2 Bolt Pattern) should be ridden with extra caution due to the footstraps releasing a lot easier than Multi-Strap Bindings. ‘Short heel-straps’ can be purchased for added foot security with single strap boards (they attach to the main footstraps on the 2x2 Bolt Pattern mount) These are highly recommended to reduce the risk of accidental injury to the rider.

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM INJURY - Ride within your own limitations and use proper safety gear (helmets & guards are recommended for more extreme forms of sandboarding) Ocean Culture IS NOT liable or responsible for your personal accidents in any way. Check the condition of the terrain before you ride. Use common sense and always ride with caution!

IMPORTANT

Please respect  the environment by keeping out of restricted zones, protected land, or re-vegetated areas. The reputation of sandboarding is in your hands... Stay on the sand dunes!
